What is notable in Sausalito: More than 20,000 marine mammals have been saved since the Marine Mammal Center was established in 1975 by Sausalito residents Lloyd Smalley, Paul Maxwell, and Pat Arrigoni. The center was founded as a non-profit private organization with the goal of saving and rehabilitating marine mammals while also offering education about marine mammals and facilities for related research. They work with whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, northern elephant seals, Pacific harbor seals, and fur seals. They deal with animals that have been found to be injured or ill, abandoned, or separated from their mothers. When possible, animals released back into their natural habitat receive veterinary care, rehabilitation, and treatment after being brought to the center.
Things to do in Sausalito: Cronkhite Fort. Fort Cronkhite, a former army post and component of the coastal artillery that defended the San Francisco Bay Area in World War II, is a part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. On the ridges above the fort, the soldiers stationed at Cronkhite oversaw radar installations, gun batteries, and other fort installations. The National Park Service is in charge of Fort Cronkhite, which is currently a part of the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. On the National Register of Historic Places, it is recognized. There are walking tours of the army buildings, but some of them are no longer open to the public because they are now used as offices by non-profit organizations. The fort's surrounding trails are great for hiking, and Rodeo Beach, a popular surfing spot, is also close by.
